The Body Shelf™ — Ergonomic Carrying Support Harness

$59.95
SizeOne Size (S–3XL Adjustable)

A shelf you wear. It gives the load a physical ledge to rest on, transferring weight off your arms, shoulders and neck onto your core, hips and legs — so your hands steady the load instead of holding it up.

  • Tested to 50 lb
  • One size adjustable, approx. S–3XL
  • Wears over clothing and outerwear
  • On and off unassisted
  • Reflective elements front and back
  • Free shipping · 30-day money back

What it does

Hold a 40 lb box at arm's length, then pull it against your stomach. Same box, completely different experience. When a load sits away from your body, your spine works as the fulcrum of a lever — and your back muscles have only a few centimetres of leverage against a load held half a metre out.

The Body Shelf makes "close" the default. The shelf sits just below your navel and gives the object somewhere to rest. The waist belt routes that weight into your pelvis, where the path to the ground runs through your legs rather than your spine.

What the testing measured

In a February 2023 ergonomic evaluation, surface EMG measured 36–60% lower back-muscle activity among male subjects carrying 25–50 lb loads with The Body Shelf compared with unaided carrying. Subjects rated low-back comfort 4.75 out of 5 using the harness, versus 2.96 carrying unaided.

The smallest result in that dataset was 2.8% — stairs, with a handrail, at 50 lb. We publish that figure too, because if you carry one-handed you should expect substantially less from this product.

February 2023 evaluation, 11 subjects (8 male, 3 female). Measured muscle activity, not injury rates. Not peer-reviewed; no statistical significance reported. Female subjects averaged smaller reductions. The Body Shelf does not replace safe lifting technique or employer-required controls. See the full methodology →

How to use it

  1. Unhook the bracket and lay the harness flat. Adjust length.
  2. Shoulder straps over, waistband around, clips engaged, nylon cinched.
  3. Shelf just below the navel. Belt on the hips. No slack.
  4. Lift with your legs — feet moved to face the load, knees bent, back straight.
  5. Settle the load on the shelf. Confirm it's stable. Then walk.
  6. Pivot with your feet. Never twist at the waist.

When to use something else

We would rather you buy the right tool than the wrong one:

  • Over 50 lb — split the load, get a second person, or use equipment.
  • If you can wheel it — a cart, dolly or hand truck beats any wearable device.
  • One-handed carries — you lose most of the benefit.
  • Oversized items — if the problem is dimensions and sight lines rather than weight, this won't solve it.
