Fit & Sizing
Is it resizable? What sizes does it come in?
It is one adjustable unit that fits approximately Small through 3XL. There are no separate sizes to order. Adjust the waistband and shoulder straps independently by lifting the Velcro and repositioning it.
Can I wear it over a coat?
Yes — it is designed to fit over clothing and outerwear. Fit it over what you will actually be wearing. A harness fitted over a t-shirt in summer will be loose over a winter coat.
How do I put it on?
- Unhook the bracket and lay the harness out flat.
- Adjust the overall length to your torso.
- Bring the shoulder straps over your shoulders.
- Wrap the waistband around your waist.
- Attach the harness and engage the metal clips.
- Cinch the nylon tight.
It should sit snug, with the shelf just below your navel. Full step-by-step fitting guide →
Can I put it on by myself?
Yes. The snap-lock closure is designed to be secured and released without assistance.
How It Works
How does it actually work?
It transfers load off your arms, shoulders and neck and onto your core, hips and legs. The shelf gives the object a physical ledge to rest on, and the waist belt routes that weight into your pelvis — so the load path to the ground runs through your legs rather than your spine. What did the testing actually show?
In a February 2023 ergonomic evaluation, surface EMG measured 36–60% lower back-muscle activity among male subjects carrying 25–50 lb loads with The Body Shelf compared with unaided carrying.
Context matters here: that evaluation covered 11 subjects (8 male, 3 female), measured muscle electrical activity rather than injury rates, was not peer-reviewed, and did not report statistical significance. Female subjects averaged smaller reductions. We publish every task-level figure and all the limitations rather than a single headline number.
Does it prevent back injuries?
No, and we do not claim that it does. The evaluation measured muscle activity, not injury rates. No study we have conducted demonstrates injury prevention. The Body Shelf is a carrying support — it does not replace safe lifting technique or controls your employer is required to provide.
Is it a back brace?
No. A back brace acts on your body to restrict motion or add support. The Body Shelf acts on the load — it gives the object somewhere to rest. They solve different problems and are not substitutes.
Using It
Is there a maximum weight?
It was tested up to 50 lb. Do not carry more than 50 lb with it. Above that, split the load, get a second person, or use equipment.
What is proper lifting technique with it?
- Move your feet to face the load — do not twist your trunk to reach it.
- Stand close, feet about shoulder-width apart.
- Bend your knees and keep your back straight.
- Lift with your legs.
- Bring the load to waist height and keep it close.
- Settle it on the shelf and confirm it is stable before you start walking.
Why do I feel pressure on my pelvis when I bend over?
Usually because the harness is doing its job. The bracket is designed to reinforce correct lifting form. Pressure on your pelvis as you bend generally means you are bending at the waist instead of using your legs. Reset — feet shoulder-width, bend the knees, back straight — and it should resolve.
It slides down while I walk. What am I doing wrong?
The waistband is too loose, or it is riding too high on your stomach instead of seating on your hips. Re-cinch it on the hips.
My shoulders are taking all the weight.
The waist belt is not tight enough, so the load has defaulted to the shoulder straps. Tighten the waist first, then re-check the shelf height.
Does it work on stairs?
It works on stairs, but be aware of a real limitation: if you need one hand on the handrail, you are carrying one-handed and the support is substantially reduced. Our evaluation measured its smallest result — 2.8% — on exactly that condition at 50 lb.
Care
Is it washable?
Yes — hand wash only, using a light detergent or mild dish soap. Do not machine wash. Air dry.
How should I store it?
On the built-in hanging loop. It keeps the straps untwisted and ready to put on, rather than tangled in the bottom of a toolbox.
What should I check before each use?
Velcro clear of debris, nylon free of fraying, and the metal clips and snap-lock fully engaging.
